Giovanni de Cristofaro, born in Monte Sant’Angelo on October 11, 1886, and died in Aosta on July 12, 1969, is one of the most significant figures in 20th-century Gargano literary culture. His work spanned poetry, prose, and theater in dialect, as well as memoirs and depictions of the life, traditions, and customs of his hometown.

His Education and Connection to Monte Sant’Angelo De Cristofaro studied in Naples, where he attended the “Genovesi” classical high school and later enrolled in the Faculty of Letters. Family circumstances, however, brought him back to Monte Sant’Angelo, where he began a career in municipal administration, eventually rising to the positions of deputy chief accountant and secretary of the ECA, the Municipal Assistance Agency. His life story remained deeply tied to his hometown, which serves as the primary human, linguistic, and cultural backdrop for his work.

Dialect as a Literary Language Throughout his long career, De Cristofaro used the Monte Sant’Angelo dialect in explicitly literary contexts, helping to establish its use in poetry, fiction, and theater. His first published work dates back to 1927 and his last to 1966: nearly forty years during which the dialect became for him not only a tool for depicting local reality, but a true language of memory, irony, reflection, and storytelling.

Una produzione tra poesia, narrativa e teatro La produzione di De Cristofaro comprende Anema nova. Reading and Translation Exercises from the Gargano Dialect for Elementary Schools (1927), From Heart to Heart. Poems in the Gargano Dialect (1929), Zurì, cane fedele… Quadri di vita garganica (1935), Who says so? Prudebbie, additte, and mountain nicknames (1943), *L’appuntamento* (1955), *’Mmizzo la streta* (1957), *La lampa de la fede* (1959), and *Racconti del Gargano* (1966). In addition to the works published during his lifetime, a substantial body of texts and materials remained, which were later recovered and published.

The Legacy of Gargano Culture In his writings, Monte Sant’Angelo is not merely the backdrop for the narrative. The town is examined through its rituals, work, festivals, religious practices, pilgrimages, family life, and community relationships. In *Racconti del Gargano*, for example, De Cristofaro devotes several pages to the Compagnia di San Marco in Lamis and to the pilgrimage to Monte Sant’Angelo, offering an insider’s view of the gestures, language, and forms of popular devotion.

From Oral Tradition to Literary Form His writing thus stems from a keen focus on spoken language and everyday culture. Proverbs, idioms, nicknames, stories, memories, and situations from communal life are transformed into literary material. In this process, the dialect is not treated merely as a folkloric artifact: it becomes a form of expression capable of conveying the psychological complexity of the characters, the humor of the situations, and, at the same time, the depth of individual and collective memory. Critical analysis and cultural initiatives dedicated to the author have highlighted precisely this ability to use dialect in a deliberate literary practice.

The “storyteller” and Gargano identity The title *Cantastorie del Gargano*, chosen for the anthology edited by Michele Notarangelo, effectively captures this aspect of his work. The term has now become part of the cultural discourse surrounding De Cristofaro and evokes his ability to transform the community’s collective memory into literary narrative. Rather than referring to a professional career as a storyteller, the expression describes the role of narrator and interpreter of Gargano culture that his work has gradually come to embody in the local cultural memory. (

The Rediscovery of His Work A significant portion of De Cristofaro’s body of work has been republished after his death thanks to the editorial efforts of Michele Notarangelo. Among others, the following works have been published: ’Mmizzo la streta (1997), Scene di vita (1999), Cantastorie del Gargano (2000), ’Ndegnamente (2002), and Letters to Giovanni de Cristofaro. Catalog of Correspondence [1913–1969] (2005). Questa attività editoriale ha consentito di ricomporre un corpus più ampio e di restituire all’autore una posizione più riconoscibile all’interno della storia della letteratura dialettale garganica.

Michele Notarangelo and the Construction of Critical Memory The collection *Cantastorie del Gargano* is one of the main vehicles through which De Cristofaro’s work has been reintroduced to subsequent generations. The volume, edited by Michele Notarangelo, includes the author’s texts, an introductory essay on “lingue grosse,” and a tribute by his son Giuseppe de Cristofaro titled In Memory of My Father. Together, these elements allow readers to explore the linguistic and literary dimensions alongside the biographical and familial ones.

A Literature of Memory: Geographical distance did not sever the author’s connection to Monte Sant’Angelo. In fact, his work continues to return to his homeland, to community life, and to the experiences of his childhood and adulthood. The nostalgia present in his writings is not merely an individual sentiment: it becomes a lens through which an entire local civilization is observed at a time when modernization, emigration, and changing lifestyles are rapidly altering its balance.

Linguistic and Cultural Value: De Cristofaro’s significance lies above all in his ability to have documented, through an extensive and multifaceted body of literary work, the dialect and cultural world of Monte Sant’Angelo in the 20th century. His work constitutes a valuable source for understanding the local language and, at the same time, a testament to Gargano society, its rituals, beliefs, and transformations. The literary and documentary dimensions coexist continuously, making his texts significant both for the history of dialectal literature and for the study of the region’s culture.

De Cristofaro is a significant figure in the history of Apulian dialect literature and is featured in the major anthologies of Apulian dialect poetry and Daunia dialect poetry. Pasquale Sorrenti included him in his monumental 1962 work *La Puglia e i suoi poeti dialettali*; more recently, Francesco Granatiero has included him in his studies of dialectal poetry from the Capitanata region. His work thus belongs to a broader regional tradition, yet retains a distinct linguistic and cultural specificity tied to Monte Sant’Angelo.

Giovanni de Cristofaro, known as “the voice of Monte Sant’Angelo,” can be regarded today as one of the leading literary interpreters of the Gargano’s 20th-century memory. His writing preserves words, images, gestures, and situations that belong to a society profoundly transformed over the course of the century, but it does so through a language capable of transcending purely documentary value. The dialect thus becomes literature, memory, and a tool of identity: an individual voice through which a community continues to speak.

Bibliografia

De Cristofaro, G. (1927), Anema nova.
